Oh, sometimes I forget how retarded we were in high school. So I grew up on Long Island, New York in a town called Baldwin. This music is my ska-rap-hardcore band from that period in time.
This song was a concept song about a place that we all enjoyed that served good, authentic chicken n’ ribs. I don’t remember how we ever first found the place or why we went there. Presumably we saw it one day while driving by, and we realized our destiny.
See, we lived in Baldwin. At the time, it had a pretty good racial mix. Today, I think it is predominantly African-American. Baldwin was largely boarded by three towns - Hempstead, Freeport, and Roosevelt. Growing up, it was kind of like - be careful if you go into those towns. So what did we do the minute we were old enough to ride our bikes freely anywhere we wanted? We visited those towns. And when we got older, those were the towns we could drive to and buy beer even though we were underage.
It was a drive-thru place called “Red Barn” and we mostly bought 40 ounces of Old English. Or you could buy a loosey (a single cigarette). You also had to drive through these towns to get to Roosevelt Field Mall (it was the best mall).
I believe the Chicken N’ Ribs restuarant was in Hempstead. We loved that place, getting a styrofoam box to go. I remember once getting some for my girlfriend for her birthday as a surprise. It was in my shitty little brown car with the roof that always fell down.
Josh and Dave share the vocals on the verses. Check out Josh’s new band Small Black here (oh wow, I haven’t checked out this page in a bit, but the new song up there is dope!!!).
Then I come in late in the second verse for a distorted rap that is mixed super low in the mix (I don’t know why or even recall it being this way). Then, at the end of this song, I do a long embarrassing list of “shout outs”. I had to read them really fast because I had so many of them and the song was only so long.
This song followed the standard Lightweights formula - verse, heavy part (or break down part), catchy chorus, then repeat, end with a looping closing refrain. Or A-B-C, A-B-C, D.
I remember playing this song live and the kids loved it. Kids used to go crazy at our shows; mosh pits, excessive skanking (aka - ska dancing), crowd sing-a-longs, photo-taking.
Favorite lyric: “when i lift some weights and eat some ribs, my muscles get mad big”. Also, “cuz the bar-b-que scene in on the mad DL (down-low).”
And of course, the “too many Lightweights, not enough ribs”, an homage to the Fugees “too many MCs, not enough mics”.
And finally, the dialogue sample in the middle of the song taken from everyone’s favorite movie “Don’t Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood”.
