doyle, dooley & co.

I have been a bit neglectful about posting to my blog within the last week, oops.  So, let’s waste no more time.

  • It’s time for another old one from my dad’s old music.  I do not know much about this song - for example who wrote it OR who plays what instrument OR how it was recorded OR who it is about - it is just one of the many songs found on my treasured archival “Doyle-Britt” cassette tape (as seen in photo above).

I am going to chop this song up and make a beat out of it.  I will post that beat tomorrow.

Oh, I called this song “My Little Charlene” and YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT FREE HERE.  This song has a mean piano intro.  Some of the singing is a bit “over the top”.

It’s kind of confusing - the spelling of the name Charlene, sounds like it should start with an “Sh”… especially when seen in the nickname form “Char”… I suppose it is pronounced “Shar”.

+++++++++++++UPDATE from my dad’s musical partner, Mr. Phil Doyle writes:

“OMG, where do I start? This goes back about 30 years. Well, I wrote it, and was responsible for the rhythm guitar and (GULP) voice, and Bill either played or overdubbed everything else.. Referring to the vocal as “over the top” is actually quite kind. I would call it terrible, and would erase it if I could. I often wrote songs that I could not sing, and this one had parts very clearly out of my vocal range. I wanted to transpose it down a few steps so I could make the higher notes, but Bill would have no part of it. He loved this song which he routinely mis-titled ‘CharlenA.’ The actual title was simply “Charlene” (pronounced Sharlain, as you noted), and was about a guy that becomes unduly fond of a hooker. A few producers loved the tune, but found the subject matter too controversial…. hard to believe today, huh?”

FANTASTIC!!!!!
