This one was on the first songs that I ever recorded in my life, and I think the only musical collaboration I ever did with my brother. I was probably 10 years old and my brother must’ve been 17 years old. He played the guitar and wrote/produced the song. I wrote the lyrics and sang.
I am thankful for this experience because it was the first time that I learned how to use a 4-track machine. My brother explained it all to me. And to this day, I still prefer tape machines to computers. Currently, I use my tascam 388:

But I will talk more about the 388 at a later date.
I titled the song “The One Picked For the Job” and the first verse lyrics are: “there was an old man who used to be a farmer / suddenly he was wearing a suit of armor / he got so nervous he had a heart attack / then he thought he was ?????? “
I think that for a kid, these are some exciting lyrics - they are basically like the Harry Potter fantasy - an ordinary person gets plucked out of everyday life to do an extraordinary challenge - the question is: do you accept this challenge?
My brother was an excellent guitar player, and I remember when this song was completed I thought it was the most amazing thing in the world. I showed it to my friend down the street, Brian Rolston, who was two years younger than me, making him 8 years old, and he had just started playing the drums. We had a “band”, but nothing we had done sounded as “professional” as this song. When I showed it to him, he didn’t even believe that it was me, or more precisely, he didn’t believe that my brother could play guitar so well. He said, “this song could be a top 40 hit on the radio” and I didn’t doubt it for one second.
I remember having a lot of trouble with my timing, with understanding where the beat was, with knowing when I was supposed to stop or start singing. But this was a very good lesson in song writing. It was probably my first and last lesson.
The second verse: “there once was a boy who was playing tag / then he ended up in a spaceship going zig-zag / he got a little nervous and scared / then he found out… he was the one, picked for the job…”
This was like the ultimate fantasy as a kid - that you are out playing with your friends, and then something crazy happens - like a wizard comes down and approaches you and tells you that you are the only one who can save the Earth.
