I wrote this song intentionally for my mom as a Mother’s Day gift. Ever read Emerson’s essay on gifts? Anyway, originally I was going to write some nostalgic lyrics with specific details, but in the end, I decided that saying nothing and evoking a general mood was a better idea. This way it is not just for my mother, but for all mothers, or to anyone who has ever had a mother.
The atmosphere is supposed to be contemplative, thinking down memory lane, thinking about things you did with your mom as a kid… but oh, now everyone is all grown up. But there are new little kids creating their own new memories. The cycle never stops.
With no lyrics, you can listen to the song over and over again, and it can do different things for you everytime - cause you to remember different memories. The more you listen to it, the less it becomes about your mom, and more about just letting your mind wander, allowing yourself the freedom in your hectic schedule to just let your mind drift for a little while. Think about something you haven’t thought about in years.
I remember recording this in the garage at Tokie’s house. Tokie is almost 90 years old. There was a party going on upstairs, but I was in no mood for a party. I forget why. But in any event, instead of partying, I wrote this janglely little tune. Just a guitar and a few casio keyboards and a four track and maybe a digital delay pedal and finally, an old cassette tape to record over.
Everyday is mothers’ day!!
For those keeping score, this song was originally released on the first NM album, after which this blog is named. It was a nice song to put on the album, a kind of calm chill song to stick in the middle of everything.
