This song is just two poorly recorded acoustic guitars and two vocal tracks. Four track cassette tape. A man in a room. Alone. With a microphone.

This song was written for my fiance Chloe, but at the time when I wrote it she was only just my girlfriend. I don’t even think we had said “I love you” yet. Either we had just said it, or else it was very soon after the release of this track. Wow, almost exactly one year ago from today… almost.

However this is the “chloe remixxo” version. How is this version different/better? Well, I remixed it a bit, using Final Cut Pro (of all programs!), to pull down the treble a bit. And I added some reverb with Garage Band. However, the real reason I even started messing with the track (because I was originally going to upload the original version, as is), but I had to remove the third verse, which gets a little bit too graphic (xxx), and it was really only originally intended for Chloe’s ears.

Ah, the missing third verse. It shall become a thing of legend. So this version clocks in at a quaint 2 minutes and 21 seconds, whereas the original was a more indulgent 3 minutes and 26 seconds. One of my old bands, Dollar Dollar, used to play this song live.

“Alone in Wisconsin / Twelve days and twelve nights, oh no… The murders on campus / It’s not safe to walk alone at night / It’s not safe to walk alone… oh…”

Well, here’s the story - Chloe works for a well-known game show and they were in Wisconsin for 12 days taping the show. They were staying and shooting at the University of Wisconsin (it was college week for the game show) and while they were there, there were all these reports in the news about some serial killer killing kids at the university. And I was missing her (chloe), so I sang her name for the chorus.

“Alone in the bathtub / With an old cassette tape / I gave you my t-shirt / To remember the way I smell / The remember the way… oh…”

I don’t know if she was really taking baths in the bathtub, but whenever I am staying in a hotel room, I will usually take a bath. And she was all alone. And I had made her a series of cassette tapes to bring with her to Wisconsin. And every night when she got off from work and returned to her hotel room, she was supposed to listen to the tapes (and she did). On the tapes, was me talking to her and reading a story I had written. It was broken up into twelve parts, and I would sign in and sign off and the beginning and end of each part. Ahhh… cassette tapes.

And I did give her a t-shirt to remember my smell. It was one of my old-old, soft ones.

And well, the third verse is a secret.
